GBI Investigating In-Custody Death of Macon Man in Houston County
HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — State investigators are looking into the death of a man who became unresponsive while being released from custody, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Shaqwan Warren, 33, of Macon, died May 6 after experiencing medical issues during his release from the Houston County Detention Center, authorities said.
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct the investigation.
Preliminary information indicates Warren was in the process of being released around 5 p.m. May 5 after being held on traffic-related charges from an arrest by the Centerville Police Department, as well as a failure to appear warrant out of Bibb County.
Officials said Warren began experiencing medical issues at the time of his release and was transported to a local hospital. He was initially unresponsive upon arrival but was stabilized by medical staff and later transferred to another hospital.
Warren was pronounced dead at approximately 2:45 p.m. May 6.
The investigation remains ongoing.
