Two Suspects Face Multiple Charges in Multi-City Shoplifting Spree Involving Detergent and Beer
COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. — Two women have been identified and charged in connection with a series of shoplifting incidents spanning multiple South Georgia communities, authorities said.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation began March 24, 2026, after a reported theft at a Dollar General on Highway 158 East.
Investigators identified the suspects as 40-year-old Tawanda Tucker and 44-year-old Amanda Nelson.
According to deputies, Nelson distracted a store clerk by engaging them in conversation while Tucker moved through the store placing merchandise, including laundry detergent, air fresheners, and plug-in products, into a shopping cart before leaving without paying.
Further investigation revealed the incident was part of a broader pattern of thefts earlier the same day in Pearson, Alma, and Willacoochee.
Authorities said each incident is being charged separately based on where the alleged thefts occurred.
In Pearson, both suspects face misdemeanor theft by shoplifting charges.
In Alma, Tucker has been charged with misdemeanor theft by shoplifting, while Nelson is charged as a party to a crime in the commission of shoplifting.
In Willacoochee, where the value of stolen merchandise exceeded $500, both suspects face felony theft by shoplifting charges, which carry a potential penalty of one to ten years in prison under Georgia law.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are expected as agencies continue to coordinate across jurisdictions.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office credited community assistance in helping identify the suspects.
