Driver Killed in Head-On Crash on Barton Chapel Road in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. — One person was killed Wednesday morning following a head-on crash on Barton Chapel Road, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at approximately 6:34 a.m. on March 4, 2026, to the 2600 block of Barton Chapel Road for a reported traffic accident with injuries.

Preliminary findings indicate a gray Mitsubishi Mirage was traveling eastbound while a black Chevrolet Impala was traveling westbound. Investigators say the Mitsubishi crossed into the westbound lane while negotiating a curve and struck the Impala head-on.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and the investigation remains ongoing.
