Union City Police Open Fire on Armed Suspect; GBI to Review Incident
UNION CITY, GA – Union City Police Department (UCPD) has requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
At approximately 7:35 p.m., UCPD officers responded to a report of gunfire at an apartment complex on the 5700 block of Buffington Road in Atlanta, GA. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Cameron Willis, 24, of Atlanta, who occupied the apartment from which the gunfire was reportedly heard.
According to preliminary information, Willis was armed with a handgun when officers approached. Officers issued commands for Willis to drop the weapon, but he initially concealed the handgun behind the door. As Willis stepped out from behind the door, the officers discharged their firearms, striking him.
Willis was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The two officers involved were taken to a separate hospital for evaluation after experiencing stress-related symptoms, including elevated heart rates and shortness of breath. Neither officer sustained physical injuries during the incident.
The GBI is conducting a full, independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be submitted to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review and determination of any potential charges or further action.
At this time, no additional details about the apartment, witnesses, or whether shots were fired by Willis before officers arrived have been released. The GBI continues to collect evidence, including statements from the officers involved and any potential witnesses.
