Columbus Police Confirm Evelyn Farmer Died of Natural Causes, Not Dog Attack
Columbus, GA – The Columbus Police Department is clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of 68-year-old Evelyn Farmer, found deceased in her home on the 4800 block of Josephine Street on Saturday, November 15.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled that Ms. Farmer died from natural causes related to heart issues. This confirms that her death was not caused by a dog mauling, contrary to earlier reports circulating in the media.
Officers initially located Ms. Farmer in the living room. Her dogs caused visible injuries after her death, and multiple animals were removed from the home by PAWS Humane Society. Due to the condition of the scene and Ms. Farmer’s medical history, the case was handled as a death investigation, which is standard protocol when the cause of death is not immediately clear.
CPD requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The department notes that public statements claiming Ms. Farmer was killed by a dog did not originate from Columbus Police and were not based on verified findings.
“This situation reinforces why the Columbus Police Department waits for confirmed medical examiner findings before releasing information in death investigations,” the department said. Investigators continue to follow established procedures: secure the scene, collect evidence, and rely on official autopsy results before drawing conclusions or speaking to the public.
