Savannah, GA – At the request of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating the death of Anthony Garza, 67, an inmate at the Chatham County Jail.

On Friday evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., jail medical staff provided aid to Garza after he reported experiencing abdominal pain. Later, around 11:00 p.m., medical staff determined that he needed to be transported to Memorial Hospital for further care. While emergency medical services were en-route, Garza was found unresponsive by jail staff at approximately 11:30 p.m. Lifesaving efforts were attempted but were unsuccessful, and Garza was pronounced dead at the facility.

An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler to determine the cause of death.

Garza was a convicted sex offender who had violated his probation and failed to register as a sex offender in Georgia. He had been in custody since May, 2025.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be submitted to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and GBI continue to work together to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
