Bibb County Graduation Rate Hits Record High, Surpassing State Average for 3rd Straight Year

For the third consecutive year, Bibb County’s graduation rate has outpaced the state average, reaching a record high of 88.97% for the Class of 2025. This marks the highest graduation rate the district has achieved in the past decade.
Most Bibb County high schools saw gains, with three schools surpassing the 90% mark. Central High led the way at 96.51%, followed by Southwest High at 92.90% and Rutland High at 90.43%. Southwest High, in particular, has shown remarkable improvement, climbing from a graduation rate of just 39.10% in 2012.
Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims credited the progress to district-wide efforts spanning Pre-K through 12th grade. “This graduation rate reflects the work of the entire Pre-K – 12 spectrum. We are especially grateful for what happens at the high school level, which includes opportunities for students to learn, recover, and gain credits toward graduation,” he said.
Over the past decade, Bibb County’s overall graduation rate has increased roughly 37 percentage points, up from 52.3% in 2012. Southwest and Northeast High Schools showed the largest gains from the previous year, both increasing by 8%. Central, Howard, Southwest, and Westside High Schools recorded their highest graduation rates ever.
Southwest High Principal A. Bernard Young highlighted the district’s student-focused approach. “Our rise in graduation rate reflects our belief that when students are seen, supported, celebrated, and empowered, they succeed,” he said. “Every student is connected to a dedicated cohort counselor who supports them from freshman year through graduation, and our Ubuntu Mentoring Model ensures they are surrounded by a village of advocates.”
The district’s success underscores the impact of long-term investment in personalized learning, social-emotional support, and strong community engagement, providing a model for other districts aiming to improve student outcomes.
