GBI Investigates Inmate Death at Towns County Jail
HIAWASSEE, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the death of an inmate at the Towns County Jail following a request from the Towns County Sheriff’s Office.
On Saturday, August 2, 2025, at approximately 3:05 a.m., deputies discovered 44-year-old Brian William Whitney of Hiawassee unresponsive in his jail cell. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but Whitney was pronounced dead at the jail.
Preliminary information suggests there was no foul play involved. An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab as part of the ongoing investigation.
