Shriners Children’s to Open 3M Pediatric Research Facility in Atlanta, Creating 470 Jobs

ATLANTA – Governor Brian P. Kemp announced at the beginning of July that Shriners Children’s will establish a new $153 million pediatric medical research facility in Atlanta’s Science Square, creating 470 high-skilled jobs and strengthening Georgia’s life sciences sector.

Shriners Children’s, a nonprofit healthcare system specializing in pediatric care, selected Atlanta for its Research Institute due to the city’s world-class academic institutions and robust talent pool. The facility will focus on orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions, burn and spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate research, while also supporting advanced therapies and medical innovation.

The research center will collaborate closely with Georgia Tech and Emory University, integrating talent in gene and cell therapy, AI, robotics, biologics, medical devices, and data science.

“This world-class facility will help improve lives for generations to come,” said Governor Kemp. Local leaders, including Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Metro Atlanta Chamber CEO Katie Kirkpatrick, praised the investment for advancing both economic development and public health innovation.

Shriners Children’s served nearly 2 million patients globally since its founding in 1922 and will now anchor its next era of research excellence in Atlanta’s Science Square, located near Georgia Tech’s North Avenue Research Area.
