Twiggs County Fire Truck Overturns After Being Struck by Speeding Vehicle on I-16; Two Injured

A Twiggs County fire truck responding to a vehicle fire on I-16 Westbound overturned after being struck by a speeding GMC Sierra on Monday, June 16, at approximately 11:36 PM. Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the collision.

The incident occurred near Mile Marker 28. The fire truck was traveling Eastbound with lights and sirens activated and began slowing down to use an emergency cut-through near the Cool Springs overpass to reach the fire. As the fire truck slowed, it was struck in the rear by a GMC Sierra traveling at a high rate of speed, causing the fire truck to flip onto its roof.

Both the driver of the fire truck and the driver of the GMC Sierra were transported to Atrium Hospital with minor injuries. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is investigating the crash.

Authorities issued a reminder to motorists about emergency vehicle safety, stating: “Lights and sirens mean you must stay away from a moving fire truck by AT LEAST 500 feet. Also, pull over to the right to give the fire truck room to pass through. The results of this accident could have been so much worse. A vehicle can be replaced, but a life cannot. Please be aware. Be safe. Pay attention.”
