Operation Wrong Exit Leads to 62 Arrests in Twiggs County Crackdown

On March 14 and 15, Sheriff Darren Mitchum of the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office conducted Operation Wrong Exit, a coordinated effort aimed at removing impaired drivers from the roads and reducing rising traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Twiggs County.

Sheriff Mitchum stated, “Our main point here is to save lives, and if one life is saved, it has all been worth it.” Captain Smith added, “If you show up driving impaired by alcohol or drugs, you will go to jail.”

The large-scale operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Dublin District Attorney’s Office, Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s Middle Georgia and South-Central Georgia Traffic Enforcement Networks, Georgia State Patrol, Motor Carrier Compliance Division, Department of Natural Resources, Probation Officers, and Georgia Department of Corrections. Additional K-9 units from the Candler and Bulloch County Sheriff’s Offices assisted in the operation. Four Drug Recognition Experts from Bibb and Crisp County Sheriff’s Offices were present to assess drivers suspected of impairment. Support came from as far north as the Calhoun Police Department.

During the two-day operation, officers made a total of 62 arrests, including 24 felony charges. Authorities reported 31 DUI contacts, 11 adult seat belt violations, and 6 child seat belt violations. Deputies also apprehended 5 wanted fugitives and issued citations for 11 open container violations and 15 suspended license offenses.

Drug-related charges made up a significant portion of the arrests. Deputies issued 23 misdemeanor drug citations and arrested 18 individuals on felony drug charges. Controlled substances seized included methamphetamine, cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, heroin, and 11 pounds of marijuana.

A notable arrest involved a mother and daughter who were caught trafficking 6 kilograms of methamphetamine.

In addition to the arrests, officers issued 160 citations for various traffic violations and other offenses. Sheriff Mitchum extended his gratitude to all agencies involved, recognizing their contribution to making the operation a success.
