Inmate Dies at Gwinnett County Jail, GBI Investigating

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has reported the death of Phillip Antwon Munroe, who was found unresponsive in his cell at the Gwinnett County Jail on January 27, 2025.

Munroe, who was arrested on July 6, 2022, on charges including Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Hijacking a Motor Vehicle, and Battery, was discovered during a routine security check in a maximum-security housing unit at approximately 2:30 a.m. Deputies administered life-saving measures, which were continued by medical staff until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived and pronounced him deceased.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an active investigation into Munroe’s death. Further details will be released upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has extended its condolences to Munroe’s loved ones and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of those in its custody.
