Motorcyclist Arrested in Stephens County Traffic Stop; Drugs Discovered
On the evening of November 9, deputies with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office S.T.I.N.G. Unit conducted a traffic stop on a black motorcycle at the intersection of Prather Bridge Road and Scott Street, leading to the arrest of Joshua Smith, 38, of Demorest.
Traffic Stop Details
A deputy observed Smith exhibiting unusual driving behaviors after spotting law enforcement vehicles. As he passed the deputy heading toward Scott Street, Smith slowed to an unsafe speed and began pulling over, prompting the S.T.I.N.G. deputy to initiate a stop.
During the stop, Smith claimed he was attempting to set up GPS on his phone while driving. Admitting he was on probation, Smith displayed nervous behavior. When asked for consent to search his person and motorcycle, Smith refused, violating probation conditions.
Search and Discovery
The deputy searched Smith and his belongings, discovering:
- Marijuana
- A hitch safe containing drug-related objects and baggies often used for illegal drugs
- Suspected methamphetamine
- Two blue pills (Alprazolam, a Schedule IV controlled substance)
- One orange pill (amphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance)
Attempted Escape and Arrest
Smith attempted to flee during the search but was restrained by deputies and taken into custody. He was transported to the Stephens County Jail on the following charges:
- Three counts of Illegal Possession of Controlled Substances
- Possession and Use of Drug-Related Objects
- Obstructing or Hindering Law Enforcement Officers
- Three traffic citations
Smith remains in custody on a $21,000 bond.
