WAVERLY, Ga. – A 26-year-old Waverly man has been arrested after authorities say an argument at a Camden County home escalated into an assault and shooting that left another man hospitalized.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged Nija Ladon Thomas with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI investigation following the Sept. 14 shooting.

The Camden County 911 Center received a report of a shooting near Massey Lane in Waverly at approximately 3:15 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found a man lying in the yard of a home with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was flown by helicopter to a regional hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.

Preliminary information indicates Thomas went to the man’s home and the two became involved in an argument, according to the GBI.

Investigators said Thomas physically assaulted the man during the confrontation and then shot him.

Camden County deputies located Thomas a short distance away in his own yard and took him into custody. He was booked into the Camden County Jail.

Thomas had previously been arrested in Camden County on April 26, 2026, for Fail to Appear to a court hearing. He was released a little more than a month later on May 29th.

Two weeks ago, on September 1st, he was arrested in Glynn County and charged with Battery. That case is still pending.
