Overturned Semi Causes Train Derailment in Monroe County; Driver Arrested

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — An overturned tractor-trailer led to a train derailment early Wednesday morning, with the truck driver later arrested on multiple charges, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 3 a.m. May 6 to Highway 83 North at Berner Loop after reports of a crash involving a semi-truck.

According to investigators, the driver said he approached a railroad crossing where the crossing arm was down and lights were flashing but was unable to stop in time. He told deputies he braked abruptly and attempted to steer away to avoid hitting an oncoming train.

The maneuver caused the truck to overturn and strike a train cargo car.

Authorities said the impact caused at least one train car to derail, bringing the train to a stop near Juliette Road and McCrackin Street.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old Kheino Bennett of Riviera Beach, Florida, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges including possession of marijuana less than an ounce, possession of drug-related objects and operating a commercial vehicle without a valid license or driving privileges.

No injuries were reported.

Highway 83 North at Berner Loop has since reopened, but officials said Juliette Road at McCrackin Street remains closed for an extended period as crews continue to address the derailment.

The investigation remains ongoing.
