GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting That Injured Savannah Man
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining an officer-involved shooting that left a Savannah man injured Saturday afternoon following a domestic disturbance call, authorities said.
GBI agents began the investigation at the request of the Savannah Police Department after officers shot 23-year-old Malik Hendrix during an encounter on Emerald Drive. No officers were injured.
According to preliminary information, Savannah police were dispatched around 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 21 after a 911 caller reported a woman being chased from an apartment by a man later identified as Hendrix. Responding officers determined a domestic dispute had occurred between Hendrix and an adult female victim. Witnesses also alleged that a child had been thrown into a dumpster during the incident.
Officers located the victim, who had already reunited with her child. The victim confirmed Hendrix’s identity and provided officers with a photograph. Emergency medical personnel transported the child to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Police initially searched for Hendrix but were unable to locate him. As officers were preparing to leave the scene, Hendrix approached them and asked if they were looking for him. Officers observed Hendrix with his right hand concealed inside his jacket near his chest and abdomen area.
Authorities said officers repeatedly ordered Hendrix to show his hands, but he did not comply. Hendrix then suddenly removed his hand from his jacket and pointed an object toward officers. Three officers fired their weapons, striking Hendrix multiple times.
A K9 unit was deployed at the same time and apprehended Hendrix, causing additional injuries. Officers rendered medical aid until emergency responders arrived, and Hendrix was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators later determined the object Hendrix pointed at officers was a cellphone.
The investigation remains ongoing. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
