Troup County Female Inmate Dies in Jail; GBI Launches Investigation

On the morning of November 26, 2025, Detention Officers with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office discovered a female inmate unresponsive in her bed during the routine morning head count and breakfast distribution.

Officers immediately alerted additional personnel and the jail’s medical staff, who began lifesaving measures. Fire and EMS units responded and took over care before transporting the inmate to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. Despite their efforts, the inmate later died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Cherika Teague of LaGrange, Georgia. Authorities have released no further details at this time.

This incident is being treated as a standard in-custody death, and the investigation by the GBI will ensure transparency and an independent review of the circumstances.
