Bibb County Deputies Safely Talk Teen Down from I-75 Bridge During Crisis

MACON, Ga. — Two Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputies are being credited with preventing a tragedy after they helped an 18-year-old in crisis come down safely from a bridge along I-75.

Sgt. George Witherspoon and Deputy Dontavis Jones were dispatched after callers reported a young man sitting on the edge of the bridge, visibly distressed and contemplating jumping. When they approached, he told them he felt alone, unheard, and unsure where to turn.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, both deputies spent the next several minutes talking with him, keeping their tone steady and calm while reassuring him that help was available. Their patience and compassion eventually convinced the teen to step away from the ledge. Additional deputies were nearby and immediately offered support once he was safely off the bridge.

The agency said the deputies’ actions likely saved a life and highlighted their commitment to serving the community with empathy, dignity, and care.

No further details about the individual are being released, and the Sheriff’s Office did not specify whether the teen received additional services after the incident.
