One Dead, One Critically Injured After Head-On Crash on U.S. Highway 1 in Toombs County

Toombs County, GA – An 86-year-old Swainsboro man died and a 71-year-old Lyons woman was critically injured after a head-on collision Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 1 South near Green Oak Road, according to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 8 p.m. on November 18, Toombs County 911 received a report that a northbound white Ford truck had collided with a southbound white van. Deputies arrived to find both drivers entrapped in their vehicles.

Toombs County Fire crews worked to free the drivers while Toombs-Montgomery EMS provided emergency care. The van’s driver, 71-year-old Yolanda Orozco-Delgado, was transported by ambulance to Air Evac Base 91 in Vidalia and then flown to Savannah in critical condition. The truck’s driver, 86-year-old Oliver Coleman, was taken to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia, where he later died from his injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol, Post 18 in Reidsville, took over the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate Coleman was traveling north when his truck crossed the centerline and struck Orozco-Delgado’s van head-on. Investigators believe Coleman may have suffered a medical emergency before losing control of the vehicle.

“We ask that you keep Orozco-Delgado, her family, and the Coleman family in your prayers during this difficult time,” Sheriff Jordan Kight said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
