Mother Taken Into Custody After 11-Year-Old Found Dead in Sandy Springs

Sandy Springs police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl after officers conducting a welfare check discovered the child deceased inside a condominium Saturday morning.

Officers were sent to the Laurel Grove Condominiums in the 300 block of Carpenter Drive NE on November 15 after a family member asked police to check on the residents. When officers entered the unit, they found Shannon Grimes inside the home along with her daughter, who was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Sandy Springs Police Department’s Investigations Division responded and took over the case. Grimes was detained at the scene and taken into custody. Police say criminal charges are forthcoming, though details have not yet been released.

The child’s cause of death has not been made public, and investigators say the case remains active. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to contact Sandy Springs Police as the investigation continues.
