Convicted Felon From Cartersville Sentenced to Federal Prison After Shooting at Police

Shane Jacquces Barfield, 39, of Cartersville, Georgia, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for unlawfully possessing and discharging a firearm at law enforcement officers.

Barfield, a multi-convicted felon with a history of domestic violence, was found guilty of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. He had pleaded guilty on May 15, 2025.

According to U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, on September 17, 2023, Barfield was driving through Cartersville with a stolen firearm and methamphetamine when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Witnesses reported that Barfield exited the vehicle armed, returned to it with the gun, and fired a shot at officers despite clear commands to disarm. Responding Cartersville Police officers returned fire, striking Barfield’s vehicle. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Federal investigators confirmed that the spent casing recovered at the scene had been fired from the stolen firearm. Additional evidence, including the firearm and methamphetamine, was seized from Barfield’s vehicle.

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown and Cartersville Police Chief Frank McCann emphasized that Barfield posed a serious threat to both officers and the community, and praised the collaboration that ensured public safety.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Terry prosecuted the case. The investigation was conducted jointly by the FBI and the Cartersville Police Department.
