Four Arrested After Shoplifting Incident and Reckless Fleeing from Cumberland Mall

On September 29, 2025, Cobb County Police, with assistance from Smyrna Police, arrested four suspects following a shoplifting incident at Cumberland Mall that escalated into a reckless attempt to evade law enforcement through heavy traffic.
Incident Details
At approximately 5:30 p.m., mall security notified an officer working security on the property about a gray Chevrolet Tahoe tied to a prior shoplifting at Dick’s Sporting Goods. A check revealed the Tahoe had a suspended registration and no insurance.
When officers attempted a traffic stop on Cumberland Parkway, the driver refused to comply and fled, reaching speeds over 70 mph in a 35-mph zone. As traffic grew congested, the suspect drove into oncoming lanes to escape. Following policy, the pursuing officer discontinued the chase and returned to the mall, while a BOLO was issued.
Although no officers were actively in pursuit with lights and sirens, the suspect continued driving dangerously. Around 5:45 p.m., Smyrna Police located the Tahoe and attempted another stop. The driver fled again, weaving through rush-hour traffic on Atlanta Road with no regard for public safety.
A Cobb County Police officer then executed a PIT maneuver, successfully immobilizing the vehicle and ending the threat.
Apprehension of Suspects
After the stop, the front passenger attempted to flee on foot but was intercepted and tackled by a citizen. Thanks to this quick action, the suspect was safely detained, and the remaining occupants were secured by officers on scene.
Suspects and Charges
The four suspects were identified and charged as follows:
- Ralph Swinger (58, Atlanta) – Felony fleeing, reckless driving, no insurance, suspended registration, and felony shoplifting.
- Joseph Ogletree (49, Atlanta) – Felony shoplifting, obstruction; also had an active Cobb County warrant for shoplifting.
- Derrick Davis (55, East Point) – Felony shoplifting; also had an active Cobb County warrant for shoplifting.
- Eddie Jones (53, Hiram) – Felony shoplifting.
Authorities credited the safe resolution of this dangerous situation to the cooperation between Cobb County Police, Smyrna Police, mall security, and a vigilant citizen who assisted in detaining a suspect.
