Carroll County deputies faced a dangerous situation Thursday morning, September 25, 2025, when a domestic dispute escalated into gunfire.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:42 a.m. to a home on Barnes Road after reports that a man inside was armed with a firearm and making threats toward a female victim. When deputies arrived, the woman was able to exit the residence and make contact with them safely.

The suspect, later identified as 66-year-old John McCormick, briefly came outside but retreated into the home after spotting deputies. Moments later, McCormick fired a shotgun from inside the house, striking several Sheriff’s Office vehicles positioned at a tactical distance. Deputies immediately extracted the victim to safety and secured a perimeter around the residence.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded and established phone contact with McCormick. After a brief standoff, he surrendered without further incident.

Sheriff Terry Langley praised his deputies, saying, “We are very grateful that no one was injured during this extremely dangerous situation. This incident is a stark reminder that no call is ever routine in law enforcement. Our deputies displayed tremendous bravery and professionalism under fire.”

McCormick was arrested and charged with:

  • 5 counts of Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement
  • 1 count of Aggravated Assault (Non-Law Enforcement)
  • 5 counts of Interference with Government Property
  • 1 count of Terroristic Threats and Acts

He was transported to the Carroll County Jail, where he remains in custody.

The Sheriff’s Office commended the swift actions of deputies, dispatchers, and SWAT personnel in bringing the situation to a safe resolution.
