Two Arrested After Pursuit, Lawn Mower Theft; Covington Officer Injured
COVINGTON, Ga.—Two suspects have been arrested following a pursuit on westbound I-20 that began with the theft of a zero-turn lawnmower from Ace Hardware in Covington.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when officers observed a U-Haul truck, previously identified in connection with the theft, at The Home Depot on Highway 142. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading to a pursuit.
During the chase, officers attempted a PIT maneuver. The suspect vehicle then collided with a Covington Police patrol car, causing it to overturn. Lieutenant Chris Cain, the officer involved, was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Both suspects were taken into custody with the assistance of the Conyers Police Department, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Georgia State Patrol.
“We’re grateful Lt. Cain’s injuries are not serious and that he is recovering well,” said Covington Interim Police Chief Brent Fuesting. “We also appreciate the assistance of our law enforcement partners.”
The investigation is ongoing.
