8-Year-Old Killed in Doraville Crash; Driver Charged With DUI and Vehicular Homicide
On Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 9:25 p.m., Doraville Police responded to a fatal crash in front of the LaCota Apartments at 6664 Peachtree Industrial Blvd involving a Toyota Tacoma and a Honda Civic.
According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the Honda Civic was exiting the apartment complex when the vehicle was rear-ended by the Toyota Tacoma.
One of the occupants, an 8-year-old girl, was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA), where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the Honda was transported to Grady Hospital; her condition has not been released.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, Jose Alejandro Cuahuizo-Varela, allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly detained by responding officers. He was treated at Northside Hospital for minor injuries before being booked into the Dekalb County Jail.
Cuahuizo-Varela faces multiple charges, including:
- Homicide by Vehicle (Felony)
- Hit and Run (Felony)
- DUI
- Reckless Driving
