Suspect Arrested After Road Rage Shooting Injures Two Children on Highway 166

On Friday, August 15th, at approximately 7:55 a.m., a road rage incident on westbound Highway 166 (at Sylvan Rd.) escalated into gunfire when a suspect opened fire on a vehicle occupied by a mother and her two children, ages 8 and 13.

After a minor crash, the suspect fired multiple shots, striking both children. The mother drove to a gas station at Main Street and Knotts Avenue in East Point, where she sought help from Officer Moss of the East Point Police Department. Officer Moss provided immediate assistance, and the family was transported to a hospital.

Using resources from the Real Time Crime Center, Officer Moss tracked the suspect’s vehicle, obtained a license plate number, and identified the owner. The information was shared with the Atlanta Police Department, who arrested the suspect within hours. He was identified as 21-year-old Bennie McCoy. McCoy is charged with  4 counts of Aggravated Assault, Possession of Firearm During the Commission of Felony, Hit and Run.

The case remains under investigation.
