A/C Technician Accused of Stealing Wedding Ring During Service Call in Cumming

CUMMING, GA — A local air conditioning technician has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing a wedding ring set from a home while performing a routine maintenance call earlier this month.

On July 10, Cameron Shafer, employed by a local HVAC company, was dispatched to a residence in Cumming to conduct routine service on an A/C unit located in the basement. The unit was accessed through a closet adjacent to the master bedroom, where the tenant—a woman renting the basement apartment with her husband—later reported her diamond and gold wedding ring set missing from the top drawer of her dresser.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office received the theft report on July 18 and quickly launched an investigation. Detectives contacted the A/C company and obtained Shafer’s personal information. They discovered that Shafer had pawned a wedding ring set on July 11 at a shop in Norcross, just three miles from his residence. Detectives matched the pawned ring to the victim’s missing jewelry using a photograph she provided.

A hold was placed on the ring set, and detectives recovered it from the pawn shop. Shafer was arrested at his former place of employment and charged with Theft by Taking and Elder Exploitation, both felony offenses. The ring was returned to the victim on July 18—just in time for her wedding anniversary on July 26.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said the arrest was made to prevent further potential victims in Forsyth and surrounding areas.
