Lightning Suspected in Deaths of Two Young Men in Waycross

WAYCROSS, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the deaths of Joey Nelson, Jr., 18, and Randall Martin III, 19, both of Waycross, after they were found deceased near Alton Circle. Lightning is suspected to be the cause.
At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025, deputies with the Ware County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call after family members discovered the two men dead next to their car. Nelson, Jr. and Martin III had gone fishing and had not returned home as expected.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the two men were fishing when a severe thunderstorm developed. As they were returning to their vehicle, they were apparently struck by lightning. The car also showed signs of being struck.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler, Georgia, will conduct an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation is still active and ongoing.
