Man Fatally Shot by Deputies During Domestic Call in McDuffie County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 63-year-old Arval Gross of Thomson, Georgia. The incident occurred Friday night, July 11, 2025. No deputies were injured.
According to preliminary information, McDuffie County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic dispute call at a residence in the 800 block of Leslie Street in Thomson at approximately 8:35 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a woman outside the home who stated that Gross was inside.
Deputies entered the residence and encountered Gross holding a shotgun in a hallway. Authorities say Gross raised the weapon toward the deputies, prompting two deputies to fire their service weapons. Gross was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
His body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
