Cornelia Police Investigate Illegal Relocation of Homeless to Private Property

CORNELIA, GA – The Cornelia Police Department is actively investigating reports that individuals are transporting homeless persons from outside Habersham County and placing them on private property within the city limits without the knowledge or consent of property owners.

Authorities say the practice is not only illegal but poses serious safety, sanitation, and legal concerns for both the relocated individuals and local residents. “While we understand and appreciate the community’s compassion and concern for those experiencing homelessness, placing individuals on private land without authorization creates safety, sanitation, and legal issues,” police said in a statement. “These actions can unintentionally place vulnerable individuals in harm’s way and create additional strain on city resources.”

Residents are urged not to leave food, supplies, or erect shelters for homeless individuals on private property without permission from the landowners. The department has received multiple complaints from residents, businesses, and property owners regarding the matter.

Anyone with information about individuals facilitating the unauthorized transport and placement of homeless persons is asked to contact the Cornelia Police Department at 706-778-4314. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 706-894-3077, emailing via the city’s website (tab at the bottom of the page), or sending a private message through the department’s Facebook Messenger.
