Man Dies by Suicide After Intentionally Setting Fire to Auto Shop in Jones County

Around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and Jones County Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Stan’s Body Shop on Gray Highway.
Investigators determined that 58-year-old John Jackson, a former employee of the business, intentionally started the fire by pouring diesel fuel on multiple vehicles inside the shop before setting them on fire. Jackson was later found deceased in the office area from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jackson had reportedly worked at the business intermittently over the years. Authorities noted that he had a history of mental health struggles and alcohol abuse, but no current disputes with the business were identified.
The fire was brought under control by the fire department, and no other injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
