Man Charged with Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage After Broad Street Shooting in Augusta

A shooting incident on Broad Street early Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, has led to charges against Demari Gaines, 20, who was also among those wounded. Richmond County deputies and investigators were working in the area when they overheard multiple gunshots coming from the 900 block of Ellis Street.

Upon their arrival at approximately 1:45 AM, officers located a male with gunshot wounds and immediately administered aid until an ambulance arrived. The injured individual was transported to WellStar Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.

Deputies also located several individuals attempting to flee the area, who were subsequently detained. Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene, along with numerous spent cartridge casings. Several vehicles in the vicinity were also struck by gunfire.

Following extensive interviews by investigators and the collection of evidence from the scene, charges were filed against Demari Gaines. Investigation revealed that Gaines was involved in the shooting and sustained at least one gunshot wound himself. He is currently at WellStar Hospital in stable condition.

Gaines faces charges of two counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree, and one count of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime.

The investigation remains ongoing, with investigators continuing to conduct interviews. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. A photo of Gaines will be released once he is committed to the Detention Center.
