Accidental Gun Discharge at Covington Big Lots Injures Two Women

Two women were injured Monday afternoon, June 23, when a firearm accidentally discharged inside a Big Lots store at 3111 Highway 278.
Covington Police responded to the scene around 1:20 p.m. after receiving reports of an accidental shooting. Officers determined that two related customers were at the checkout counter when one of them dropped her purse. After placing the purse on the counter and completing her transaction, she picked it up again. At that moment, a firearm inside the purse fell to the floor and discharged upon impact.
The bullet struck the owner of the firearm in the ankle before ricocheting and striking her relative. Both women sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical assistance at the scene. No other individuals were injured.
Following an investigation and consultation with the Newton County District Attorney’s Office, authorities determined that no criminal charges would be filed.
The Covington Police Department emphasized the importance of proper firearm storage and handling in public areas.
