ATL Airport to Upgrade Wireless Network with Next-Gen 5G System by 2026

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is moving forward with a major infrastructure upgrade to boost wireless service for over 100 million annual passengers. On May 19, the Atlanta City Council approved agreements with wireless carriers T-Mobile and AT&T to install a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS), pending final approval by Mayor Andre Dickens.

The new DAS, scheduled for completion in January 2026, will provide enhanced cellular coverage and faster speeds throughout the airport, from curbside to gate. It will replace ATL’s aging 4G infrastructure with 5G technology, eliminating dead zones and ensuring seamless connectivity across all terminals.

ATL General Manager Ricky Smith emphasized the project’s role in future-proofing the airport’s digital capabilities, while Mayor Dickens highlighted the importance of maintaining ATL’s status as a global connectivity leader.

The upgraded system will also improve radio communication for public safety personnel, reinforcing the airport’s operational safety standards. The new ‘neutral host’ design allows support for future carriers and expanding wireless services.

Travelers can expect more reliable and faster cellular service across domestic and international terminals, enhancing the overall passenger experience at the world’s busiest airport.
