GBI Rules Bell Mountain Deaths of Lewis Brothers a Suicide-Suicide; Investigation Concluded

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has concluded its investigation into the deaths of twin brothers Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis, both 19, of Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County. The GBI has determined the case to be a suicide-suicide, based on autopsy results and comprehensive investigative findings.
The investigation began on March 9, 2025, after hikers discovered the bodies of the two men at the top of Bell Mountain in Hiawassee. The Towns County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI shortly after the discovery. Both brothers were found with gunshot wounds, and the initial report had indicated a possible murder-suicide.
Key findings from the GBI investigation include:
- Cellular location data tracked the Lewis brothers’ movements from their home in Gwinnett County to Bell Mountain. Corresponding video footage showed the brothers were alone during their travels.
- Only Naazir Lewis went to the airport on March 19, 2025. He never boarded a flight. Records indicate he was the only one with an airline ticket.
- Ammunition used in the firearm was purchased by Naazir and delivered to the residence on March 5, 2025.
- Internet searches on their phones included topics such as how to load a gun, suicide statistics in 2024, and other related queries.
- Forensic analysis confirmed that both brothers discharged a firearm.
- Medical examiners concluded that the injuries were self-inflicted.
GBI agents met with the Lewis family to share the investigation’s findings. The case will be formally closed in the coming weeks. Understandably, the family is having a difficult time accepting the result. A Gofundme has been setup to help the family.
Related Update – March 18, 2025:
The GBI arrested Scott Kerlin, 42, of Hiawassee, and charged him with misdemeanor obstruction. Kerlin, a volunteer firefighter in Towns County, took unauthorized photos of the Lewis brothers’ death scene and shared them publicly.
Original Incident – March 9, 2025:
Towns County 911 received a report at approximately 11:05 a.m. that two individuals were found deceased at the top of Bell Mountain. GBI investigators responded to the scene, and autopsies were conducted. Initially, the case was believed to be a murder-suicide pending further forensic testing.
