Drugs, Weapons Seized in Sumter County Traffic Stop; Two Arrested

Two individuals were arrested on drug-related charges following a traffic stop conducted by a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Deputy on Saturday, May 17, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Blvd.

The stop was initiated due to a traffic violation. Upon investigation, deputies discovered that a passenger in the vehicle had an outstanding warrant and was taken into custody without incident. Subsequent to his arrest, further investigation revealed he was in possession of what appeared to be a crack smoking device.

An additional investigation led to a canine search of the vehicle. The canine alerted, prompting a search of the vehicle where a large quantity of “X pills” (ecstasy/MDMA) were found and confiscated from a backpack in the backseat. Further investigation determined that the rear passenger was in possession of the bag containing the pills. As a result, both subjects were arrested and charged with drug offenses.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a warning for the initial traffic violation and released from the scene.

The arrested individuals were identified as:

  • Kyle Stephens, white male, charged with possession of a drug-related object and child support.
  • Mack Thompson, black male, charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office extended its thanks to the deputies and police officers involved in this incident for their continued efforts to remove illegal drugs from the streets of Sumter County.
