GBI Dedicates Mausoleum for Unidentified Remains

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) held a special ceremony on Monday, May 13th, at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center to dedicate its new mausoleum, a permanent and dignified resting place for unidentified human remains entrusted to the agency’s care.
The ceremony brought together GBI staff and forensic specialists to honor the lives represented by the remains and to underscore the agency’s unwavering commitment to providing answers and closure for families still searching for missing loved ones.
“Our mission is rooted in bringing justice, answers, and closure,” stated GBI Director Chris Hosey. “Even when names are not yet known, each person deserves to be treated with dignity, honor, and respect. This mausoleum ensures that these individuals are cared for in a manner befitting that belief.”
Previously, unidentified remains were handled with care but stored in less permanent facilities. The new mausoleum offers a long-term resting place, allowing for the preservation of remains while investigations continue. The ultimate goal is to identify these individuals and reunite them with their families.
The GBI’s efforts to identify these remains involve leveraging advancements in forensic science, utilizing national databases, and collaborating with law enforcement agencies both within Georgia and across state lines.
