Two Walker County residents were arrested on felony aggravated cruelty to an animal charges after attempting to have their dog euthanized by a local veterinarian.

44-year-old Anthony Griggs and 42-year-old Crystal Spring Branch were taken into custody by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the jail for booking.

On Monday, March 17, 2025, officers with Walker County Animal Control responded to The Animal Medical Center of Fort Oglethorpe after staff reported a potential cruelty case. Veterinarian staff said the dog, named Roxy, was severely malnourished, emaciated, and unable to walk. Staff also reported the dog had long fingernails, sores, and wounds consistent with neglect.

Animal Control Manager Tyler Bishop said Griggs and Branch claimed the dog had stopped eating and began losing weight about five months ago. They also admitted the dog had not been seen by a veterinarian before they attempted to have it euthanized.

Another animal in the couple’s home showed no signs of neglect.

A felony aggravated cruelty to an animal conviction carries a punishment of one to five years in prison, a fine of up to $15,000, or both.

The Animal Medical Center of Fort Oglethorpe is working to raise funds to find a rescue for Roxy, who will require round-the-clock care. Those interested in donating can contact Bobbie Giese at 706-861-0873.
