Macon-Bibb County Honors Girls Dig Deeper Initiative for National Mentoring Month

On Thursday, January 30, Macon-Bibb County celebrated National Mentoring Month by presenting a Mayoral Proclamation to the Girls Dig Deeper Initiative (GDDI), a partner of the Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) program. The proclamation was read by MVP Coordinator Jeremy Grissom.

National Mentoring Month is an annual campaign designed to raise awareness of the importance of mentoring, celebrate the impact of mentoring relationships, recruit new mentors, and encourage institutions to integrate quality mentoring into their practices.

The Girls Dig Deeper Initiative is a youth mentoring and development program based in Central Georgia, serving girls aged 13-17 in schools, communities, and even incarcerated youth. The program uses a 1:1, group, and team model of mentoring to help young girls develop leadership skills, self-confidence, and resilience. In January, GDDI launched The Winners’ Mindset program to inspire youth girls to rise above the challenges they face.

The organization received $15,500 in grant funding from MVP in 2023. The funding included $5,500 in the first round and $10,000 in the second round to support leadership development programs aimed at helping girls overcome barriers like poverty, poor academic performance, and community violence.

The mission of GDDI is to guide and empower young girls to access their inner potential and become positive influences in their communities.
