Macon-Bibb Crews Mobilize to Keep Community Safe During Snowstorm

As Macon-Bibb residents braced for snow by stocking up on groceries and preparing for winter activities, local officials and crews worked tirelessly to ensure the community’s safety during the rare snowfall.

Preparations began days before the storm, with the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) holding regular meetings with first responders and county support teams. EMA Director Spencer Hawkins provided updates on Facebook Live, helping residents stay informed about the weather and safety measures.

Public Works, Facilities and Management, and Parks and Beautification teams began salting streets and sidewalks ahead of the storm. Over two days, Public Works crews spread 150 tons of salt and gravel mix across more than 70 bridges, road sections, and intersections, working 28 hours to keep roads clear.

“I’m really proud they hung in there for 17 hours the day of the storm and came right back the next day and put in another 11 hours,” said Public Works Director Tim Wilder. “It shows that at Public Works, we have a good team that will stand in there and get the job completed no matter what it takes.”

Parks and Beautification teams assisted local hospitals by salting sidewalks and entrances and helped the Sheriff’s Office clear ice from roadways.

“Each and every day we are Team Macon-Bibb, but that is so visibly evident when severe weather strikes,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “The only question we get is how soon can we help, and it makes me proud of our team.”

The Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department ensured public safety, patrolling the roads to assist residents in need.

County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett praised the collaborative effort: “As so many people do as needed by hunkering down and staying home, our crews mobilize to clear roads and help public safety continue to protect our community. We are so much safer when weather hits because of our crews and public safety personnel’s dedication and expertise.”

Macon-Bibb experienced 2-3 inches of snow on Tuesday, and the efforts of the county’s teams ensured residents could safely enjoy the rare winter weather.
