Inmate Found Dead in Cook County Jail; GBI Investigates
At the request of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the death of an inmate at the Cook County Jail.
On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at approximately 7:00 a.m., 47-year-old John Vanhouten of Adel, GA, was discovered unresponsive in his cell. Jail officers and responding EMTs attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Macon will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation is active and ongoing.
