Cobb County Officer Fatally Shoots Dog After Response to 911 Distress Call

On the evening of December 2, 2024, at approximately 8:40 PM, Cobb County uniformed patrol officers responded to a call for assistance near Macland Road and Corner Road. The call, made from a 911-only cell phone, contained limited information, only indicating that a voice was heard shouting “help me.” Due to the nature of the call, the officers were unable to follow up directly with the caller.

Concerned for the safety of anyone in distress, the officers began a thorough search of the area. Their investigation led them to a private residence on Macland Road, where they spoke with the homeowners to clarify the situation.

During the conversation, the family dogs began to exit the residence. Despite the homeowners’ attempts to control the dogs, one of the dogs ran toward the officers. Fearing for their safety, one officer perceived the dog’s actions as a potential threat and discharged his service weapon, fatally wounding the animal.

An internal review of the incident will be conducted as per department protocol. The situation has raised concerns, and authorities are taking appropriate steps to assess the events surrounding the shooting.
