As Thanksgiving approaches, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department is urging the community to take precautions when deep frying turkeys. While turkey frying has become a popular way to prepare the holiday meal, it also poses significant fire risks if not done safely.

Each year, turkey fryers are linked to hundreds of fires, injuries, and property damage across the country. To help ensure a safe Thanksgiving, the Fire Department has outlined essential safety tips for frying turkeys:

Turkey Frying Safety Tips

  • Always fry outdoors: Never use a turkey fryer inside a home, garage, or covered patio.
  • Choose a flat, level surface: Place the fryer on a stable, non-flammable surface such as concrete.
  • Keep a safe distance: Position the fryer at least 10 feet away from structures, including your home and deck.
  • Thoroughly thaw the turkey: Ensure the turkey is fully thawed to avoid oil splattering or boiling over, which can lead to burns or fires.
  • Do not overfill the fryer: Follow manufacturer instructions to avoid overflowing oil when adding the turkey.
  • Use the correct oil temperature: Use a thermometer to ensure the oil reaches the recommended temperature, as overheated oil can ignite.
  • Have a fire extinguisher on hand: Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire.
  • Wear protective gear: Long sleeves, gloves, and safety goggles can protect against splashes of hot oil.
  • Supervise at all times: Never leave the fryer unattended and keep children and pets away from the fryer.

Dangers of Turkey Frying

  • Grease Fires: Overheated oil or spills can ignite, leading to uncontrollable fires.
  • Burns and Injuries: Hot oil can cause severe burns if splashed or spilled.
  • Property Damage: Fryer fires can quickly spread, resulting in costly damage to homes.

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department urges everyone to follow these safety guidelines to prevent accidents and enjoy a safe holiday celebration.
