Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport Prepares for Record Thanksgiving Travel Surge

As the Thanksgiving travel surge approaches, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is bracing for a significant increase in passenger traffic, with projections expecting over 4.2 million travelers to pass through the airport between Friday, Nov. 22 and Tuesday, Dec. 3. ATL officials and partners held a press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 19, to offer travelers essential information to navigate the busy holiday period.

Jordan Biegler, ATL’s Assistant General Manager of Operations, identified Nov. 22 (Friday), Nov. 30 (Saturday), and Dec. 1 (Sunday) as the busiest travel days, with over 373,000 passengers expected on Nov. 22 alone. To help ease congestion, passengers are advised to arrive at least two and a half hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.

“Preparation is key,” ATL officials emphasized, urging travelers to check the airport’s website, ATL.com, for real-time updates on parking availability, security wait times, and food options. Additionally, passengers are encouraged to monitor ATL’s social media accounts (@ATLairport) and their respective airlines for up-to-date information on potential flight delays or changes.

TSA regulations were also highlighted as essential for smooth travel. Passengers are reminded to review their luggage to avoid carrying prohibited items, particularly firearms and ammunition, which must be securely stored in checked baggage.

To further assist travelers, ATL has implemented 18 new passenger information totems throughout the airport’s pre-security areas. Powered by real-time data from Xovis, these totems provide wait-time updates at various points within security lines, aiming to guide passengers efficiently through the airport.

Airport officials also reminded passengers to remain alert for suspicious activities and to report anything unusual to airport security or by calling 911. ATL’s green-coated guest service representatives will be stationed throughout the terminal to assist with any inquiries and ensure a smooth and safe journey for all passengers.
