GBI Seeks Public Help in 26-Year-Old Cold Case of Coffee County Taxi Driver’s Murder
John McKinnon

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is asking for public assistance in solving a 26-year-old cold case involving the murder of 67-year-old John McKinnon.

On November 2, 1998, McKinnon, a taxi driver, left his home in Coffee County, Georgia, to pick up an unidentified passenger. Shortly after, McKinnon’s wife heard unusual keying sounds over the CB radio he used in his cab. When she asked if he was okay, the keying abruptly stopped.

Approximately 45 minutes later, McKinnon’s body was discovered in a ditch in a rural area, nine miles west of Douglas. He had been shot, and his taxi was missing from the scene. Later, police recovered his taxi more than ten miles away on South Gaskin Extension in Douglas.

The GBI is actively seeking any information that could shed light on the events surrounding McKinnon’s death. Those with information are encouraged to contact the GBI at 1-800-597-8477.
