Central Georgia Skills Challenge to Showcase Future Construction Talent on October 31

The Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) is collaborating with Sheridan Construction to host the Central Georgia Skills Challenge, welcoming construction students from high schools across 26 local counties. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 31, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Macon State Farmers Market, located at 2055 Eisenhower Parkway.

The Central Georgia Skills Challenge is one of eight regional competitions held throughout the state, bringing together over 2,300 students from more than 100 schools. Competitions at this event will include various skilled trades such as blueprint reading, cabinetmaking, carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing, roofing, TeamWorks, welding, and welding fabrication.

“As the host contractor for the Central Georgia Skills Challenge, our Sheridan team is pleased to partner with local industry to offer a first-class opportunity for students to showcase their talents in a competitive environment. We also look forward to connecting with students to share information about rewarding careers in construction,” stated Christy Kovac, President and CEO of Sheridan Construction.

A total of 150 students are set to compete in the Skills Challenge, with an additional 100 students observing in hopes of participating in the future. Throughout the event, students will have the opportunity to engage with construction industry professionals who will host interactive activities, enhancing their familiarity with specific construction trades.

“High school instructors who teach construction-related curriculum are frontline champions for careers in the construction industry. These professionals work hard to teach their students real-world skills and prepare them for ‘game day’ type experiences at Skills Challenges. It’s exciting to see young men and women showcasing their trade talents in an exciting atmosphere,” commented AGC Georgia CEO Mike Dunham.

Students from construction programs in the following counties are invited to compete: Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Crawford, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Hancock, Henry, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Macon, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Rockdale, Spalding, Twiggs, Wilcox, and Wilkinson.

Participants who are members of SkillsUSA Georgia and compete in cabinetmaking, carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing, TeamWorks, welding, and welding fabrication will be eligible to earn a bid to the SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Competition (SLSC), scheduled for February 2025.
