Toddler Saved by LifeVac After Choking; Dunwoody Officer Honored for Life-Saving Actions
On August 12, 2024, at 5:53 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home on Queensborough Drive in DeKalb County, Georgia, after receiving a report of an 18-month-old choking on food. Upon arrival, Sgt. Nelson found the toddler unconscious, blue in color, and struggling to breathe.
Sgt. Nelson quickly utilized a LifeVac choking device, which successfully removed pieces of food and fluid from the child’s airway. Moments later, DeKalb Fire Engine 12 arrived to assist with additional medical care.
The child regained consciousness in the ambulance, began breathing on his own, and his vital signs stabilized. The toddler was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite (CHOA) by AMR for further medical treatment and has since made a full recovery.
The LifeVac devices, which were used in this life-saving incident, had been donated to the Dunwoody Police Department by the Dunwoody Police Foundation. The donation allowed every police vehicle in the department to be equipped with one of the devices.
In recognition of his actions, Sgt. Nelson was honored at the Dunwoody City Council meeting on Monday night, where he was awarded the Medal of Meritorious Service for his quick response and life-saving efforts.
