Student Arrested for Terroristic Threats at Crisp County High School
On September 6, 2024, Morgan Travelstead, a 17-year-old student from Turner County, Georgia, was arrested by the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office following allegations of making terroristic threats. The threats were reportedly made via an application called TextNow.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer was first notified of the threats, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigative Division. The Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office was also involved in the case. During the investigation, Travelstead’s belongings and vehicle were searched; no weapons were found in his possession.
The investigation is ongoing, with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office working closely with school officials to ensure community safety. The Crisp County School System is fully cooperating with the authorities.
The Georgia Emergency Management/Homeland Security Agency Area 2 School Resource Division has been notified of the situation. Sheriff Billy Hancock emphasized the seriousness with which threats are treated, stating, “We take all threats to the safety and security of our citizens seriously. We want to assure our community that any and all threats of violence within our school system will be thoroughly investigated. The safety of our students, teachers, and staff is of utmost importance, and we are committed to working diligently with school officials and other partners to ensure a safe environment for all.”
Cindy Hughes, Superintendent of the Crisp County School System, expressed appreciation for the swift response from the sheriff’s office, saying, “Our number one priority is the safety of our students and staff members.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding threats or suspicious activity to report it immediately to ensure the safety of the community.
