Georgia State Patrol Trooper Fires at Suspect During Berrien County Pursuit

At the request of the Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Berrien County, GA. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a GSP Trooper initiated a traffic stop for speeding on Roy Kyle Mathis, 53, of Berrien County. Mathis did not stop, leading to a pursuit. After executing a PIT Maneuver, the Trooper attempted to remove Mathis from the vehicle. When Mathis approached the Trooper, the Trooper fired at the car. Mathis then drove off, turning onto a dirt road and crashing into a tree on a private property. The Trooper used a Taser to subdue Mathis as he tried to exit the vehicle.

Mathis was evaluated on-site by EMS and transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. He is currently held in the Berrien County Jail.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation. Once completed, the case file will be forwarded to the Alapaha District Attorney’s Office for review.
