Georgia DOT Opens Final Segment of New Third Lane on I-85 Northbound

On August 30, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors opened the remaining segment of the new third lane on Interstate 85 northbound from US 129 to US 441. This opening comes just in time for the expected heavy travel during the Labor Day period. Throughout August, the project team has steadily brought segments of the project online as they reached completion.

The 13-mile project aims to widen both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-85 from two lanes to three, stretching from US 129 to US 441. The construction also includes replacing and widening four mainline bridges in two separate locations. This effort builds upon the earlier widening accomplished during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the I-85 Widening projects. These initiatives are part of a long-term strategy to expand I-85 to the South Carolina state line, enhancing capacity and improving traffic flow through the corridor.

Currently, six miles of the southbound portion have already been opened to traffic, with overall project completion anticipated in September.

Georgia DOT has advised motorists to drive cautiously through the work zone as crews continue to finalize the project. Drivers should follow posted signage and remain alert for workers in the area.
